Ginting became Indonesia's only hope in the men's singles after Jonathan Christie was knocked out in the first round of knockout. He managed to advance to the semifinals after defeating the Danish badminton player, Anders Antonsen. This victory led Ginting to become the first Indonesian badminton player to reach the Olympic semifinals after 17 years. 17 years ago, namely in 2004, Taufik Hidayat managed to bring Indonesia's name to the semifinals and even then to bring home the gold medal.
